Options for the World Cup 2026, which will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, have emerged.
It is noted that FIFA is considering three options for the tournament, which will play 48 national teams for the first time.
According to the head of global development of FIFA, Arsene Wenger, at the moment the following options are being discussed:
- 16 groups of three teams each – the top two teams from each group qualify for the playoffs;
- 12 groups with four teams – the first- and second-place teams in quartets and the best of the third-place finishers qualify for the playoffs;
- Division of all 48 tournament participants into two halves, each with six groups of four teams. The winners of each half will meet in the final.
