According to Villa CEO, Christian Purslow, Dean Smith failed to improve the club’s results and position which lead to the decision. At the moment, Villa’s ranking is #17 which is only two points from the relegation to the Championship.
Dean Smith signed with Aston Villa in 2018 and promoted the club to the Premier League in his first season and finished the last season with an 11th place. However, after Jack Grealish left Villa to sign with Manchester United, the club’s performance showed the first signs of decline so it will be a narrow escape if they avoid relegation. Their last victory was in September, and current season has brought only ten points so far. According to statistics, their losing run is the biggest since their 2017 season is the Championship, so Villa is determined to take time and consider a new candidate thoroughly.
Christian Purslow expressed his respect and gratitude to Smith in his official statement released on Sunday.
