Prominent boxing journalist Mike Coppinger has openly challenged Daniel Dubois’ claim to being a legitimate world champion. Dubois recently called for respect after his victory over Filip Hrgović, asserting that he deserves recognition as a world champion.
However, Coppinger responded by stating that while he does not disrespect Dubois, he views Oleksandr Usyk as the true champion in the division, implying that Dubois holds only a “paper” title.
The British heavyweight, Dubois, was named the interim world champion following Usyk’s decision to vacate one of his belts. However, the debate over Dubois’ legitimacy as a champion continues, especially with Coppinger’s remarks highlighting the distinction between a “real” champion and a titleholder due to technicalities.
Looking ahead, Dubois faces a significant challenge in September when he is set to fight Anthony Joshua. This bout will determine the holder of the official IBF belt, providing Dubois an opportunity to solidify his status in the heavyweight division.
