KHL Urges the Use of Neck Protection Following Tragic Hockey Player’s Death

The Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) clarified whether players should use additional neck and throat protection in light of the tragedy involving former NHL player Adam Johnson.

The tragedy occurred on October 28 during a match in the British Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) between the “Sheffield Steelers” and the “Nottingham Panthers.” Johnson, a 29-year-old, suffered a neck injury from a skate blade during a collision with Matt Petgrave.

This incident happened when Johnson fell to the ice, and despite bleeding, he attempted to return to the bench. The game was eventually stopped, and a decision was made not to continue the match. Johnson was taken to the hospital but sadly passed away.

According to the KHL’s press service, the rules of hockey stipulate that all players under the age of 18, regardless of the competition or tournament they participate in, are required to use neck and throat protection as well as a full-face helmet.

However, the Kontinental Hockey League urges players to take care of their health and reminds that, according to the rules, the use of neck and throat protection is recommended for hockey players of any age.

Previously, the leadership of the National Hockey League (NHL) strongly recommended players to use neck protection during matches following the tragedy.
