After suffering an injury while celebrating a remarkable stage victory, a rider was forced to pull out of the Giro d’Italia and end his participation in the race.
On Tuesday, a cyclist from Eritrea named Biniam Girmay made history by becoming the first Black African to win a stage at a grand tour. During the tenth stage, which took place in Jesi, the sprint to the finish line was an exciting battle between the 22-year-old and Mathieu van der Poel.
During the celebration on the stage, however, he accidentally poked a cork from a bottle of prosecco into his left eye, causing him to sustain an injury that required him to be transported to a nearby hospital.
The team physician, Piet Daneels, stated that medical checks had discovered a hemorrhage in the eye, and that the cyclist had withdrawn from the competition to “minimize” any further risk.
After that, Girmay returned from the hospital and celebrated with his teammates, although he has since withdrawn from the competition.
