The International Football Federation (FIFA) has announced a three-year suspension for the former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales. This suspension will apply at both the national and international levels.
The decision by FIFA’s disciplinary committee is related to an incident that occurred during the award ceremony for the women’s World Cup champions, which concluded in Australia and New Zealand on August 20. At that moment, the 46-year-old Rubiales embraced and kissed the lips of the Spanish national team player Jennifer Hermoso. Following the incident, FIFA’s disciplinary committee temporarily suspended Rubiales from engaging in football-related activities. In September, he also stepped down from his position as the president of RFEF.
Rubiales was informed of FIFA’s disciplinary committee’s decision today. According to the relevant provisions of FIFA’s disciplinary code, he has ten days to request a motivated decision, which remains subject to possible appeal in FIFA’s appeals committee.
